5 Reasons to Clean Your Room This Week

Research shows that kids who do chores grow into happier, healthier, far more successful adults, and the sooner parents start them on them, the better off they will be. It is that very stat that led past generations to grow up doing household chores. Eighty-two percent of adults today report that they did chores growing up. Fast forward to their kids and only 28% of them do household chores.

Chores and household cleaning have other benefits as well. The fact that cleaning is labor can mean great rewards and well-being for all who take part in them. This Monday, May 10 is national clean your room day and those who take part in cleaning their room or home for that matter will benefit in these 5 key areas.

Feel Relaxed

First, you will feel more relaxed in your new space. It’s no doubt that when there is clutter and messes in your room you don’t feel relaxed and perhaps even stressed. Just seeing things everywhere that there is space can be overwhelming and maybe you don’t even know where to start. It’s might be so messy that you can’t even eat at your table, cook on your stove, or sit on your couch. You’re constantly thinking of everything around you. Taking time to straighten up and put items away each week or each evening can make a huge difference in how you relax and get ready for the next day.

Appreciate What You Have

Next, you will start to appreciate what you have. Taking time to clean and reorganize your room means you find things you didn’t know you had. Maybe you don’t need more batteries or light bulbs at the store or you have more clothes to wear than you thought. By going through your closet you find treasures that, all of a sudden, are like going and buying new clothes at the store. Do you like to shop? Try shopping in your very own closet with the things you never wear and find a hidden treasure to wear next week. You might even find new clothes you’ve never worn because they immediately got buried in your closet.

Find Things You Own

Not only do you find things you thought you never had, but if you maintain a level of cleanliness and organization you will be able to find things easier and faster. Do you hunt every morning for your keys, your purse, or your favorite shoes? By cleaning and organizing your room you will gain time back each morning because you can find everything you need quickly. This leaves you with more time to, again, relax or sleep each morning. Enjoy each morning with your coffee and your kids before work and school and stop having to repeatedly search for things every day.

Give Back

The fourth thing that will benefit you benefits others as well. By cleaning your room you will find things you never use anymore. We as adults accumulate lots of stuff over the years. Do we use everything all the time? Probably not. Taking time to ask yourself, “Do I still use this?” Is a very useful tool for cleaning and even decluttering. You might find that you have boxes of clothes and items your not using or even need anymore that could benefit someone else. So before you finish, think about the things in your room or house that you don’t need and then donate them to your local thrift store or nonprofit.

Space to Play

Lastly, now that you are done, you can now go back to what I said first, reward yourself, and relax in your newly cleaned room. You will be amazed at what a room can look like when it’s cleaned and decluttered. If you have kids it’s more space for them to play and use their imaginations. When there is little space to play, it’s easy for them, and you, to default to watching TV and playing computer games. By giving your kids a blank canvas to play and use their creativity, you are helping in their growth and development. Not to mention the development they got from learning to build a habit of chores and cleaning into their life as well. So this coming Monday, take time to sort through and clean your room, it might take all day or it might only take a couple of hours. Once it's completed relax, reward yourself, and enjoy the home or room that you have.
